The Situation in April 2003
Flood defence plans for Lewes are on hold. When new plans are announced,
they probably will be even less satisfactory than the ones they replace.
Floods Minister Elliot Morley thinks that flood defence for Lewes is
high priority, but officials in his department are bound by rules that
require them to spend the money allocated by the Treasury elsewhere.
If the bureaucrats prevail and the rules are strictly applied, the Malling
Brooks area will be defended before the end of 2004. The Cliffe
and South Street area may benefit from an inadequate scheme a year or
so later. And that's all!
If you are not happy about this dire situation, make
your feelings known. Write to the Minister responsible, asking
him either to change the rules which pose such a great threat to the prosperity
and vitality of our community, or to direct his officials to consider
a plan that will protect the town as a whole rather than dividing it into
haves and have-nots.
