Campaign for Adequate Flood Defence Funding
LEWES FLOOD ACTION & SUSSEX EXPRESS LETTER CAMPAIGN
2006
Objective: to get as many as possible letters from individuals to the Chancellor of the Exchequer, demanding adequate flood defence funding.
Result: This was a highly successful campaign. On 6 July 2006, a delegation from Lewes Flood Action, accompanied by Norman Baker MP, Merlin Milner (Mayor of Lewes) and a representative of the National Flood Forum delivered over 3,000 letters to Downing Street,
- Most of the letters came from Lewes and district but some were from as far afield as Carlisle, Manchester, Wales, Lincoln, Cambridge, London and the Isle of Wight.
- One in five Lewes households wrote to the Chancellor.
- Almost 700 people who don't live in Lewes were concerned enough to sign a letter.
Read some of the things that Lewes people said to the Chancellor in their letters.
Lewes Flood Action and the Sussex Express say THANK YOU to:
- Everyone who helped at the campaign meeting. distributed the posters and letters, collected letters, and generally made the campaign such a success.
- Lewes District Council for making additional copies of the letter.
- National Flood Forum for helping us to contact other flooded areas.
Next steps:
On Wednesday 15 January, a delegation from Lewes Flood Action, together with Norman Baker MP, will meet with Ian Pearson MP, Minister of State (Climate Change and the Environment) at DEFRA, to make the case for adequate funding for Lewes's flood defences.
