Flood Warnings by Telephone
The Environment Agency runs a scheme whereby its computer will telephone
you when a flood alert is issued. You will need to provide them
with your name, address and postcode (so that they know which area you
are in) and can register both a daytime phone number and one for evenings
and weekends. You can also register your mobile phone or fax number.
When a flood alert is issued, the Environment Agency's computer will
ring each number on its list and play a recorded warning message.
At the end of the message, you will be asked to press a key on your telephone
to confirm that you have heard it. If there is no reply, the system
will wait ten minutes and ring again, and if necessary will try again
after another ten minutes, before giving up.
When the automated system rings you, it lets the phone ring for 25 seconds.
This is essential information for those of you who set up their answerphones
or fax machine to kick in only after a certain number of rings.
Count how often your phone rings in 25 seconds, and set up your system
accordingly.
To register for this free service, you can either fill out a form (which
you can find in the Flood Pack, issued to every household by the Environment
Agency) or ring the FloodLine number (0845 988 1188) with your details. Alternatively,
you can fill out the form below, and your details will be e-mailed to
the Environment Agency.
