Volunteer Flood Wardens in Lewes
1. What do Flood Wardens do?
There is no set formula - it all depends on your area. However,
Flood Wardens often carry out the following tasks:
- Encourage people in your area to be well-prepared for flood emergencies
- Identify vulnerable people in your area, such as elderly or disabled
people
- Promote general awareness of flooding issues in your area
- Build up local equipment stores, such as sandbags, and a directory
of useful contacts
- Pass information to, and receive information from, the Environment
Agency, local authorities and emergency services
- Pass on flood warnings in your area, and support the authorities,
in any future flood emergency.
The Flood Warden network is supported by the Environment Agency and the
local authorities, but most of its energy comes from the people of Lewes
who volunteer as Flood Wardens.
2. How large an area does a Flood Warden cover?
No
more than you can manage effectively. It could be just the street
you live in, or could also include a few streets which connect to it.
3. What sort of support does a Flood Warden receive?
You will be supported by a Sector Co-ordinator, who will in turn be supported
by the Flood Warden Scheme Co-ordinator and his/her Deputy.
4. How do I find out more about volunteering as a Flood Warden?
Flood Wardens are currently being sought in all flood-prone areas of Lewes, and the responsibilities are not heavy! Contact Chris Kemp, Town Ranger,
at Lewes Town Hall; or by telephone
on 01273 471469; or on his mobile on 07766 287695; or by e-mail at information@lewes-tc.gov.uk. Have a chat, without any obligation, to find out as much information as you want.
